UNESCO GEOPARK

Flysch & Karst

The Geopark of the Basque Coast is comprised of the municipalities of Zumaia, Deba and Mutriku and has recently been named a UNESCO Global Geopark. Geology is the main character of this landscape. The 13 kilometers of the geopark’s cliffs contain a spectacular formation created from different rock layers, known as Flysch.

As if it were a book, one can read over 60 million years of the Earth’s history. Among these layers we can observe a fine black line directly related to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Visitors can walk along the cliffs or enjoy a magnificent boat tour.

Moving inland from the coast, we encounter the carstic world. A succession of many caves were used by our predecessors as a home, and many vestiges still remain of the festive activities and cultural concerns.

The Geopark of the Basque Coast will leave you breathless. Check it out!
